Being a 48-year-old Trekkie, V’ger has a special place in my heart. I have never been satisfied with where the lore has been trying to steer the Great Borg Origin Debate within the V’ger continuity.
I've thought about this on/off for years. The Shatnerverse presented the idea in Star Trek: The Return, then further played with it through how Kirk survives those events into Star Trek: Avenger, and Star Trek: Legacy on XBOX furthered the V’ger/Borg connection. Star Trek: Destiny gives the Borg origin a go, but I really hated that idea.
This is really just the framework for the idea. I plan to go MUCH deeper into the lore, both canon and other sources. I don't plan to simply explain away what has come before, either. I'd rather use what came before as potentially incomplete observations and/or misinterpretations of the actual events, then build plausible, logical connections around them without trampling what is currently considered canon within the respective lore.
The V’ger/Borg debate is really just the cornerstone. If I do it as fan fiction, for me it works more as cosmic existential horror once we stop asking whether V’ger “created” the Borg and start asking what kind of organic civilization could encounter something like V’ger, survive it, misunderstand what it witnessed... and then spend the next million years trying to become it.
